Ideas for 17th Precinct...

Confirmed actors:
Jeff - James Callis
Caolan - Jamie Bamber
Morgana - Tricia Helfer
Right on! So what could these three get up to? I have a few ideas... :D

(Ron Moore if you use these please be fair and pay me OK? xoxo D)

Can't Buy Me Love
Jeff's ex-wife (played by Lucy Lawless) shows up in town all sexy and in a huff, demanding more child support. Jeff's conscience takes the visible shape of Morgana in a blonde wig. Meanwhile, Caolan keeps seeing a strange blonde lady too (played by Katee Sackhoff). His longing takes the physical form of binge drinking and he ends up chasing a pigeon with a broom for ages. No crimes are solved in this episode.

A Rose by Any Other Name
Jeff decides that his name is completely boring and unfitting to his androgynous British charm. He goes and changes it to Sebastian D'Ubervilles. Susan, who has been bonding with Jeff because of their dull names, breaks up with him. Caolan notices changes in his wife's appetite, but can't figure out why. Will Jeff change his name back? In the actual plot, the town is swept by a wave of mysterious murders, and the murderer always leaves a rose on the crime scene. But when you sniff it, it smells like something quite different. Is it a real rose? Is the murderer a rose-inventing magician? Could this be more contrived? I'm no good with police plots.

I think I need to yank the horniness higher and it will improve my ideas.

A Chest Hair's Stroke Away
When the Chest Hair Strangler (Callum Keith Rennie) terrorizes the town, Jeff develops a mysterious rash which doesn't allow for him to wear a shirt. Seeing his delicious chest hair and tummy all the time, Morgana realizes her horniness could be the very key to solving the case...

Sexual Liaisons
Caolan and Jeff get more than a little bi-curious, and one thing leads to another... In the police plot, some guy is murdered with a baseball bat up his oh who the hell cares, sex all around!

Great 17th Precinct Info Post. (James Callis-heavy)

Monday, April 11th

I just have to post this, because it's a VERY GOOD OMEN INDEED.

theaarondouglas: BTW. Spoke to James Callis, said 17th precinct was a great shoot & everything he hoped it would be. Check it out when it airs, gonna be gold

I know James must have had high hopes for the show, after BSG. So hearing it's what HE hoped it would be, I have extremely high hopes myself now. Eeee!

Sunday, March 27th

Tricia Helfer just tweeted a photo from the wrap party!! Handsome alert! Chest hair alert! HELP! They are too pretty together!! Also, James' ears never cease to amuse and endear me. Very cute.

So that's a wrap then. I dunno how I can wait until September. I hope we get some teasers and stuff before it...

Oh, and I almost forgot to add this, the most adorable James/Jamie photo yet! They're trying to figure out a word in a crossword puzzle. Look at James' thinky brow!!!! Thanks to Craig A. for the photo.

Thursday, March 24th

And we have news on the name! Jeff was turned into John, so the final name is John Bosson. Awesome! It's a bit rhymey, but then so is James Callis. I don't know why I feel so strongly about this, but I just simply cannot see James as a Jeff, and I'm very happy they switched it to John. It's a slightly dull name, but it has no strong connotation with "American guy", and this helps me believe in the character. I like the last name Bosson a lot, too.

The shoots in Vancouver will end this week. After that, there are some screenings, and the shoots continue in May if NBC people like what they saw. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

A big article on the pilot script. This one is more positive-sounding than the taragel one. There are many spoilers, so I won't reveal everything. But it sounds very cool, and James has some powers of his own! Also this:

Caolon (pronounced ‘Kay-Lawn’) Longstreet, played by Bamber, is a blonde thirty-something copper who project a seriousness and deep focus. His partner Jeff Bosson, played by Callis, is a Brit; unlike Caolon he’s a bit more down-to-earth and not exactly fit.
Not exactly fit?! O.o Does that mean they will REFER TO THIS on the show? Because if they will, I have a feeling I will forgive many, many plot holes and suspend lots of belief.

An article from YVR shoots, by Susan Gittins:

I arrived to see detective partners Jamie Bamber and James Callis filming a scene exiting from their strange police car to investigate a crime scene in the alley. Between takes, the two ex-BSG castmates proved inseparable, giving each other playful shoves and taking breaks at the craft tent together.

Playful shoves!!! Sounds so "dude" and amusing. Obviously they're great friends, and I'm sure this chemistry will show on their scenes too. Excellent.

Lots and lots of photos at zimbio! James and Jamie, James alone. Craig Anderl from the set has also been tweeting many photos. But how to link to them all at once? Oh I know, browse through my Tumblr. (The link is to the "17th Precinct" tag, so it should find all posts with that tag, no matter when you read this post.)

Oddly enough, James has SHORT hair. So much for that squee. But hey - he looks like a cute hedgehog! :D So not too shabby. He looks chubby to me, although not everyone agrees. But needless to say, I am happy! You can tell from the photos with James and Jamie that James is meant to be a slightly more down-to-earth character, someone who may be a bit of a maverick. I wonder if the coffee is part of the script, or if he just brought his own. He looks laid back though. This will be interesting. Although I will say that I'm sorry for Jamie if he has to play the straight man again while James gets to goof off/have more variety to his character.

Oh and look at this! I think he's actually picking up a donut!!!! I think, I  mean it could be a bagel or a muffin or something, but... *drools* He looks SO happy. :D My dream is to see him eat a donut some day, but this is really good too.

Meanwhile, James is obviously getting into character by listening to some Dire Straits, and was shocked over Japan. Many new tweets at his twitter. (And yes, it's really him.Craig said so.)

Tuesday, March 8th
The shooting started today!

Tricia has dyed her hair brown for the role, and the result can be seen here. Very classy! I was worried they might give her jet black hair, but this looks much better.

M and I were discussing the pilot scoop - found in taragel's post linked below - that "Jeff" is sleeping with his partner's wife, "Susan". So what will the character be like? Will this be another morally ambiguous character? Will he be remorseful or turned on by the secrecy, or both? Will we get James Callis love scenes again?!

We joked that, since everyone else on the show has more exciting names, Jeff and Susan might be bonding over their dull names.

Jeff: I feel somehow... inferior and dull next to "Caolan" and "Morgana".
Susan: Well, what about me? Susan.
Jeff: We have so much in common.
Susan: Let's make love!

Either way, not looking forward to all the "Oh he's a traitorous manwhore like Gaius!" comments on Twitter.

Saturday, March 5th.
I'm going to start this now, even if we still know very little. I plan to put all the news on the show here until it airs, so that you don't have to weed through endless newsposts here.

Facts known as of today:
-created and produced by Ron D. Moore
-shot in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
-the pilot will be directed by Michael Rymer

James Callis' character is, a homicide detective. He's long-haired and British.

Jamie Bamber plays a crime scene investigator who's very focused.

Tricia Helfer plays Morgana, a necromancer, acting as a coroner.

Other cast members include Stockard Channing and Matt Long.

There's a review of the pilot here (taragel's LiveJournal). It sounds like the show is set in a sort of alternate universe where both the cops and the villains use magic. Ah! That sounds interesting. I thought it'd be more like regular people in our universe fighting evil magic. I love the idea of plants inside houses, and I think this might look really neat. Many of the aspects sound interesting. However, I'm a bit worried about the fact that it sounds so police-procedural and so little character development. Like taragel, I'm worried it's going to be a little cheesier than BSG and not as compelling. (The linked post was written before James and Tricia were announced, so it doesn't discuss how central their roles are. I'm hoping James' will be more central than Jamie's, since Jamie is apparently not very prominent in the pilot.)

The show could really go either way for me. I could love it, or I could be kind of meh. I like supernatural elements in shows, but I don't love police procedurals. I've never been drawn to shows that operate on "crime of the week". I'd rather see characters and themes building up. That said, those two don't have to be mutually exclusive; I just don't want to see another CSI with magic thrown in. As for the magic being cheesy, I might still like it. I do enjoy Medium and The 4400, because I love the actors on those shows, their chemistry, and the characters they build little by little, even if the plot doesn't always compel me. I have a hard time believing that James, Jamie, and Tricia wouldn't bring something more into the roles than is on the page.

I'm going to be cautiously optimistic about this. I trust RDM, Michael Rymer, James, Tricia and Jamie. (Not necessarily in that order.) And I promise, if I don't like it, this is not going to turn into "17P Hate Blog" where I rant each week about how much I hated the latest episode. (Note how I'm omitting the possibility that it won't be a series.) I want to support this project because these people are like... (family? No, way too cheesy for ppl you haven't met) (TV friends? Hmm) people I feel warmly about, without ever having met them. (Eh.) I hope I'll also get to squee though.

Oldie But Goldie: The Sci Fi Guys w James Callis

I know this is an old thing, but I've never claimed that this blog is all about the latest news.

If you haven't heard the Sci Fi Guys interview with James Callis, it's a must-hear. You can stream it here. It begins around 40 minutes and goes on til about 1 hour, and after that they gush over him, calling him one of the most humble guests ever. Someone who will praise anyone but himself. So true. Nothing wrong with tooting your own horn a little, James. But it's totally sweet, of course. He also talks about how human beings are basically animals and in denial about it (I don't remember what the question was but it wasn't that deep :D), and discusses his first roles. I love how he mentions Soldier, Soldier and is like, "I made great friends from that". That's the only positive thing he has to say about it. Hee!

One thing I really love about this interview is how he talks about Tricia Helfer and Lucy Lawless. He gets the usual question of how gorgeous they are and how it is to work with them. He's like, yes they're gorgeous. BUT they are also so talented, and I'm so impressed with them, and I love Tricia as a person. This is one of those very proud fan moments. It's a very feminist thing to say, really. And just a very respectful thing, seeing her as a human being who has a beautiful face and body, but also a lot more. You can tell that the other stuff is more important to James.

I find Tricia to be amazing. I have a connection with that lady, we have a kind of chemistry we play off.. and that takes.. I can't explain, but I think it comes very naturally to her, she is a natural actress, and the things she has to do... if she couldn't do it, I couldn't do it. We are like twinned to the hip, somehow. She's a beautiful lady but she's beautiful in the inside as well. She's generous and kind and sweet, and working with someone like that, it's another gift.

And he sounds SO warm talking about her, really. You can hear in his voice that he means it all and more.

Lately I've thought of Tricia more again. From the beginning, she was part of my fandom, but it's kind of become all about James. I do miss Tricia sometimes, though. She seems like a lovely, genuine person, much like James, and I imagine they're great friends. But I don't know if my heart can handle two equally powerful fangirlisms, so James it is.

More Picspam, Because I Have No Self-Control.

I love this picture, BUT he looks like one of my supervisors at work in it! It bugs me every time I see this photo. Yet I feel like including it.

So, rewatching the Last days of bsg video... I noticed there were new bits! From James and Tricia shooting the final scene! O.o

Look at these adorable pictures of James hugging people. I could watch a 20-minute video with just this. (And I don't care how crappy the quality may be, because it's Youtube and not me. But awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww gush!!!)

Also: dancing and jumping around again! :D

Baltar/HeadBaltar love from season 4 of BSG:

He keeps subtly changing expressions the whole time, especially as regular Baltar. It was hard to capture it all!

"She's a sexy lady." "Yes, and..?" "Hot?" "You slay me, you really do, Gaius."
Such a great scene. (L)!!!

Some more recent stuff - Sci Fi Wire interview, FlashForward.

How can he look so adorable in the hoodie? (L)!!!

And some more from season 4 of BSG, which I just acquired on DVD some time ago. It's all so new and exciting.

Not a fan of the Jesus beard but always a fan of his expressions. Here he's praying for the sick boy.
And caught in bed with a young acolyte first thing. Everyone seems to be taking it in stride. Hee!

Those Crazy Kids.

How cute is this?! James Callis and Tricia Helfer on a break during BSG shooting. James is eating what appears to be chips (or crisps?), offers some to Tricia, she pretends to stop short of taking one and they laugh. And then she takes one. They are so cute, it should be illegal.

Would you watch The James And Tricia Preparing For a Scene Show? I totally would.
(This is my capture of a moment on the Behind the Scenes for season 3, from a TV rip made by someone. Sorry about the quality.)

James Callis Interview at Galactica.tv!

This is something I've been waiting for, because Galactica.tv does awesome interviews. Here's their article on James Callis, interviewed by Marcel Damen last month. I talked to Marcel about a year ago, and he worked hard to get this interview. I also see he snuck in his question about the glowing spine! Hee!

Firstly, some good news: he has a small part in an Edward James Olmos movie tentatively called America, and he's got many other things lined up for this year as well. He just can't talk about them right now. Whew!

There's quite a bit about James' background as an actor, which is not something that comes up in most interviews.

I left school, I went on a gap year and I actually went touring around Europe with an amateur theatrical company. The person who was directing that is now actually my best friend, but the play that we did was a disaster. It was really... A lot of people don't do this stuff anymore. It was like taking a play around Europe in one of those Volkswagen campervans. A lot of people didn't get on, we were young and we didn't have audiences. It was tough as all hell.

Aha, that must be the Beginner's Luck backstory! Maybe it's a remnant of older theatre tradition - theatre groups travelling Europe and such to put on plays, when cinemas and TV weren't around yet. It sounds like a pretty difficult way to engage an audience these days. I'm not sure if I'd try that out. It just sounds like the recipe of a disaster, a bunch of people you don't know traveling around doing something really emotional for no money. Beginner's Luck certainly didn't make it look like fun.

And apparently they took him into university because of that experience? Hee! He doesn't sound that excited about what he did at university, which feels like an odd sort of relief. I didn't do that well at university myself. (Well, I did get high grades, but I dropped out of some courses and my thesis was a disaster.) I'm also interested to hear he was working at a kibbutz for a while.

A bit about his family:
I think my mother had done some acting before and my grandmother was going to be an opera singer, but when my grandmother was younger it wasn't correct -- in my family -- for a young lady to be on stage. That was like a disaster. Things had changed a lot by the time I came around, so they were very supportive. I think they knew it would make me happy.

That's really interesting. It must be where his performing/singing talent comes from. It's also really sad - if his grandmother had lived now, she could have pursued the career she wanted. My grandmother was a great writer, but she couldn't afford an education and never pursued a writing career. Sometimes I think of her and how I can carry on that legacy. I can get my words out, she couldn't.

I tend to glamourize James, I think, but it sounds like he's seen a rougher side of life with the theatre group, and he's seen the ordinary life. Maybe his life is still pretty ordinary everyday life - kids, taking them to school, going to the supermarket, what have you. Considering that he's been through all that, maybe that's what makes him so humble. (Yes, even his ordinariness makes me put him on a pedestal, I am hopeless.)

About the threesome bed scenes:

Tricia is beautiful, Lucy Lawless is beautiful and I'm not! What I mean to say is that when we were there lying in bed, it's just a shot (snaps his fingers) and then it's: "Get up, get out."

Yes you are beautiful! Oh James, always so self-deprecating. It's interesting that he doesn't seem to find those scenes that sexy. As a viewer, like he says, you're always imagining more to it than they're showing. I know I've thought of it several times.

I'm trying to not quote the whole thing, but I found this really interesting:

Every other day you'd finish and there was this thing and I'm like: "Oh my God. I'm covered in blood and grime and shit and tears. I've got a headache, my head hurts from those cigarettes we had to smoke, which had some really strong tobacco -- they were nauseous things." So I was like: "Yeah, I'm on Battlestar Galactica."

It sounds like it was a really tough experience on all levels. The reality of it all really came through, I think, and he played it for real, so I'm not surprised it was hard to do it.
(Also, he mentions smoking, which I'm kind of obsessed with since I kinda took up smoking and am trying to quit. Mm, smoking. I wonder how strong the cigarettes were, doesn't he chain smoke anyway?)

It's always a surprise that they had so much fun on set, after all that. He mentions telling Lucy that her body double had a spot on her butt, which made her give up the body double. Hee!

Most importantly of all - why didn't Baltar notice Six's glowing spine when they had sex?

(laughing) I just don't know about that myself. I imagine on some level in the relationship that she was always on top. That's about all I'll say.
Hee! :D Yeah, on more than one level, probably. You know, I've seen a lot of interviews and this hasn't come up before, surprisingly.

("on some level" count: 6. He also says "at an early age" twice and "a really young age" once.)

Also - he doesn't plan on appearing in Law&Order UK. I'm a bit disappointed, it doesn't seem like a half bad show, and Jamie's on it. But I'm glad he feels like I do: that it's hard to find roles that... oh sod it, I'm quoting again.

Then you read other stuff and it doesn't come anywhere close to the moral complexity, ambiguity, tarnished nature of the human soul. So it's hard finding things that for me have the integrity that this show had. I think that will be a problem for everybody who was involved in Battlestar Galactica essentially.
It's like that for the viewers as well, I think. I hope he can find something that lives up to Gaius Baltar, but I might forever compare his every role to that. It's great he was involved in that, but it's also a disappointment to see him in a role that isn't as demanding or giving to the audience.

The Black Market / The Captain's Hand Picspam

The Black Market
in which Galactica suddenly becomes a murder mystery show. But we'll skip most of that.

Roslin wants to catch those thugs who run the black market in the fleet! Gaius Baltar is completely unaware of such stuff, and shows it by looking innocent.

"No more black market! How can life go on?"

In case somebody just tuned in and/or has the IQ of a goldfish: FISKE RUNS THE BLACK MARKET AND BALTAR IS BUYING CIGARS FROM HIM. This will all be forgotten after this episode, tough, so don't bother memorizing if you're slow.

Later: Gaius comes to get his cigar fix. Fiske has been killed, and Gaius is shocked. Lee Adama goes from pilot to private investigator to work on the case (really, this episode...)

It may not make much sense, but at least it gives us the unusual sight of HeadSix next to Lee. How often do you see that?

Lee: "Doctor Baltar! Fancy seeing you here! Isn't this your brand of illegally smuggled
cigars, by the by?"
Gaius: "Um... Eh... I don't know what you're talking about, Pilot Inspector.. I mean..."
(looks guiltier than a 5-year-old caught stealing cookies)
HeadSix: "Gaius, you're the vice president! Why are you acting like a kid caught with your hand in the cookie jar?"
Gaius: "Have I ever NOT acted that way?"
HeadSix: "Fair enough, but can't you at least pretend to be confident? You're embarrassing me."
Gaius: "Um... I'm vice president! Show some respect, lower-ranking military guy."
*gives Lee a staredown*
HeadSix: "Not bad. I think I can train you to do this."

So then we have HeadSix taunting Gaius and Gaius acting arrogant to cover up his guilt.
Such novel and revolutionary use of these characters.. what an episode!

Moving on. Laura Roslin calls Gaius for a meeting. A nice little tea time just for presidents
and vice presidents.

Laura: "You know, I never quite know where I stand with you."
Gaius: "Oh yeah? Well, *I* am not the one hiding a bunch of vicious feelings and judgements."
Laura: "Hmm?"
Gaius: "Hmm?"
Laura: *tries to look through Gaius, gets lost in the layers of arrogance*

Laura: "Um, so with you being this brilliant scientist and saving my life and all..."
Gaius: "You flatter me. Do go on."
Laura: "...I was thinking you might want to step down from politics now."

HeadSix: "Wow, she's totally intimidated by you!"
Gaius: "Really? ...Madam President? Actually, there's nothing I want more than to be VP."

Laura: "I thought you didn't want to be president anyway."
Gaius: "I never did. Until this very moment."
Laura: (thinks) "Damn, I knew I should have used reverse psychology."

The Captain's Hand

Zarek has invited Gaius for a meeting. A nice little booze time between vice presidents and
ex-vice president candidates.

Zarek: "You could totally lead this fleet, Gaius. You're what people need now."
Gaius: "You flatter me. Do go on."

Gaius: "OK, I'm no dummy, Tom. What's in it for you?"
Zarek: "Oh nothing, nothing. Nothing at all. I just thought you might want to remember your
friends."
Gaius: "Yeah... too bad I don't really have any."
Zarek: "Me. I'm the friend."
Gaius: "OH."

Laura comes into Gaius' lab, asking about humanity's survival in the future. (vis-a-vis a hot abortion debate going on in the fleet) HeadSix is very amused by all this. (And apparently towers over Laura kinda creepily. I think she's standing closer to the camera here though.)

Gaius: "Well, if you'd only asked, I could have told you what the figures are. Of course,
I already have it all calculated. You seem to forget I am a genius."
Laura: "Sorry, slipped my mind... (thinks) because of how you act sometimes."
Gaius (thinks) "Me genius. Laura sexy."
Laura: "So the figures?"
Gaius: "Humanity will be extinct in the next 18 years."
Laura: "What?"

Gaius: "Um, provided we don't procreate like MAD. In fact, it's every fertile woman
and man's duty to do this service to their country..."
Laura: "I'll get back to you on this." (leaves before Gaius can seduce her)

HeadSix: Gaius, are you thinking what I'm thinking?
Gaius: Mm... Laura sexy...
HeadSix: Gaius! -You could use this issue in your political advantage.
Gaius: OH.

Later, Roslin and Gaius meet the press head on:

Laura (thinks): "Imagine them in their underwear... The more ludicrous the better.. done.
Ah, that always helps."
Gaius: "Eek, so many journalists! -Hey, is that Playa? Like the new hairdo. Like my longer hair, baby? Maybe after this, we could... oh damn, HeadSix is watching. Ahem."
Laura (thinks): "I hope Baltar isn't imagining me in my underwear."
Gaius *imagines Laura in HeadSix's underwear*

"Hee! My boy up there, talking to the press! Look how insecure he is! Awww."

"Allow me, Madam President. Now people, if we outlaw abortion, we're like those evil machines, the cylons, who stand for everything that's rotten in the universe..."

"He's only saying this to win them over. Nananana I can't hear him..."

"Now with that topic out of the way, onto the most important topic: ME! I am running for president! Try to control yourselves, ladies..."

Clap. Clap. Clap. BAM! BAM! BAM! THUNDERBOLTS! Devil's horns on Six! This is a bad omen, Gaius. Run for your life!

"I'm so clever, even HeadSix loves me! Boy, did I do good this time."
